PNG to support Solomon Islands' efforts to restore economy

3:33 pm on 29 July 2004

Papua New Guinea's prime minister, Sir Michael Somare, says his country will support Solomon Islands' efforts to restore its economy and maintain law and order.

Sir Michael told guests at a State dinner for visiting Solomon Islands prime minister, Sir Allan Kemakeza that PNG would drop its "mere spectator" status to provide technical assistance to its Melanesian neighbour.

That assistance, he said, would come in the form of a development co-operation agreement and a Memorandum of Understanding on judicial assistance to Honiara.

The prime minister also promised more than 630 thousand US dollars for the construction of the Solomon Islands chancery in Port Moresby.
