Concern in Fiji over water problems

2:32 pm on 27 July 2004

Fiji national airline Air Pacific's chief executive, John Campbell, says water and power problems will drastically affect tourism growth in the country in the future.

The Fiji Sun says Mr Campbell has told this year's Tourism Convention that demand for water would rise sharply when major hotels now under construction are completed.

He says new hotels need 1,000 litres of water per room per day and he doubts if the Public Works Department can supply it.

Mr Campbell says the present water supply to hotels is inadequate, reticulation is a problem and leakage is high.

He says electricity supply to resorts is unreliable, forcing operators to rely on costly back-up power sources.

Mr Campbell has also criticised the high cost of telecommunications in Fiji including charges for the use of the Internet, which he says will not meet visitor expectations.
