Norfolk minister allegedly killed by son

2:49 pm on 20 July 2004

The son of a Norfolk Island minister shot dead has appeared in court on the Island.

25 year old Leith Buffet is accused of murdering 60 year old Ivans Buffett at his office at Kingston.

He made no plea.

Andrew McRae reports from Norfolk Island.

"The court of petty sessions heard that the accused went to his father's office, shot him and went home, telling his mother he'd rid the world of the evil one. Buffett's parents had been concerned about their son's mental health since he returned to the island in April. The island's chief magistrate, on a conference call from Sydney, remanded Buffett in custody and ordered a psychiatric report. It's only the second homicide on the small island in the last 150 years. The killing of Janelle Patton in 2002 remains unsolved and there is a 300,000 dollar reward for information leading to a conviction."
