A 25-year-old Norfolk Island man will appear in court on the island today charged with the murder of senior government minister, Ivens Buffett.

The Land and Environment Minister was found dead in Norfolk Island's administration building yesterday morning.

The island recorded its first murder in 150 years in March of 2002, when the body of local woman Janelle Patton was found.

No one has yet been charged over her death.

Australian Federal Police experts and additional detectives are due to arrive in Norfolk today to begin their investigations into Mr Buffett's death.
