7:27 pm on 19 July 2004

Australia's Federal Police say a man has been murdered on Norfolk Island.

The murdered man is understood to be the island's Land and Environment Minister, Ivens Buffett.

He was found dead in Norfolk Island's administration building this morning and a man has since been taken into custody.

The island recorded its first murder in 150 years March of 2002, when the body of local woman Janelle Patton was found.

The 29-year-old had been stabbed and beaten and her body wrapped in plastic and dumped in a public reserve, horrifying the island's 1,800 residents.

No one has yet been charged over her murder.
