The European Union is to cut back sugar exports, a move which is likely to please Fiji's ailing sugar industry.
The EU hopes to enact rules by next July which it claims will give sugar-exporting countries such as Fiji more access to the market.
The Commission is proposing to substantially cut back sugar exports and export refunds, abolish intervention, and reduce EU production.
However it says sugar beet farmers will receive new payments, and the reforms will safeguard jobs in the European sugar industry.
Last week the chairman of the Fiji Sugar Commission, Gerald Barrack, told an economic symposium that globalisation had skewed trade rules against exporters from developing countries.
