Vanuatu' caretaker Finance Minister, Jimmy Nickelim, is in police custody, charged with inciting a terrorist act.

Radio Australia reports that Nickelim, a member of the Vanuaaku Party, is one of the ten people charged over the alleged destruction of ballot boxes last Friday on the island of Tanna.

The ballot boxes were reportedly taken from police and the contents burned.

Mickelim was one of a number of sitting Vanuaaku party members to be voted out in the election.

He is facing charges of inciting a terrorist act along with another unsuccessful candidate, and eight others are charged with committing a terrorist act and unlawful assembly.

The ten will appear in the Supreme Court on Tanna on July 26th.
