PNG Catholic Church disgusted by what it calls political games

10:50 am on 9 July 2004

The Catholic Church in Papua New Guinea says it is thoroughly disgusted by what it describes as the political games being played in Port Moresby.

The Church's General Assembly says it recognises the democratic right of the Opposition to put a vote of no confidence in the government, if there is good reason to do so.

But it says the stability of government and continuity of government policies and priorities are also important.

The Assembly says the Opposition must give good reasons why it should be allowed to govern, and present clear alternative policies, while the Government should not use stability as an excuse to avoid addressing the real issues of the country.
