Arrest warrants for Vanuatu poll protesters

10:43 am on 2 July 2004

The Vanuatu Electoral Commission says it's asked police to arrest several people, calling for a boycott of next week's national election.

The chief electoral officer, Martin Tete, says the Commission acted after people in Malampa province contacted them to say a group was putting up posters which call for a boycott.

He says that contravenes the Electoral Act.

Mr Tete says he's not sure why such a protest's been mounted...

"But according to some of the information that we have heard from the police they say that they totally disagree with the decision of Government to dissolve the parliament."
