Fiji's monopoly Amalgamated Telecom Holdings has announced a profit of US$24 million for the financial year ending on March 31st.

The company will pay out US$7 million in dividends in August, similar to the interim dividend it paid last February.

ATH holds a monopoly on domestic, international and mobile phone services in Fiji for another nine years.

The Fiji times reports the profit announcement has been followed by calls for immediate reductions in call charges.

But the domestic call company, Telecom Fiji, is looking for an increase of 1,000 per cent in line rentals in return for reducing some call charges.
