Air Pacific to carry armed air marshals

9:16 am on 26 June 2004

The Fiji government has agreed to an American request to put armed air marshals on all Air Pacific flights to the United States or through its air space.

The minister for civil aviation, Josefa Vosanibola, says the police will be responsible for providing trained personnel needed for the job.

The police spokesman, Mesake Koroi, has confirmed that officers from the newly established Tactical Response Unit will act as air marshals.

Mr Koroi is quoted as saying officers from this unit would be the best for such duties because they have been trained for hostile situations and in the use of guns.
