The independence movement on Easter Island in Chile says it's encouraged by the hearing it has had at the United Nations for its demand to be inscribed on the UN list of territories to be decolonised.
Rapa Nui was annexed by Chile in the late 19th century and its language had been banned during the rule of General Augusto Pinochet.
A delegate from the Rapa Nui parliament, Erity Teave, says the movement's ambition in the short term is to get a local government of Rapa Nui people.
"The ideal formula for Rapa Nui to get out of the colonisation philosophy or concept is a local government of Rapa Nui that creates its law, with an associated government of Chile until the decolonisation and international recognition takes place."
