Generator failure blacks out Fiji's main island

9:16 am on 19 June 2004

Fiji's main island, Viti Levu, was plunged in a prolonged power blackout from mid-afternoon yesterday.

It happened when two generators at the Monasavu hydro power plant failed, causing the other two generators to overload and shut down.

Many factories and businesses were forced to shut down early as thousands of workers went home.

Power was restored first to essential services like hospitals and water supply by early evening and the rest of Viti Levu a little later.
