The governor of American Samoa has called on lawmakers to approve US$156,500, to pay off complainants in three out of court civil cases.

Togiola Tulafono, says these are the full payments of settlement agreements entered into between all parties to resolve litigation.

Two of the civil lawsuits, name the three defendants as the LBJ Medical Centre, a doctor who worked at the hospital and the government, which owns the hospital.

The third case names the government and its department of education.

Togiola says resolution of each dispute significantly reduced the government's exposure, had the cases gone to trial.

The cases only became public because it required legislative approval.
