Telco row in Samoa delays service expansion

4:50 pm on 10 June 2004

The row between SamoaTel and its cellular rival Telecom Samoa Cellular has delayed the expansion of the cellular network in Samoa.

The Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi told parliament that he and the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Palusalue Fa'apo II, were scheduled to meet with representatives of the two companies in an attempt to resolve the dispute.

SamoaTel resulted from the government corporatising the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications in 1999.

It inherited an interconnection row with Telecom Samoa Cellular, created in 1997 to introduce cell phone services to the country.
