More than 200 candidates to contest Vanuatu general election

10:45 am on 9 June 2004

Vanatu's snap general election will field 219 candidates for the country's 52-member parliament.

The electoral office says 52 candidates will be running on independent tickets.

Our correspondent says the large number of independent candidates reflects the frustrations with party candidates who their electors say, have not been living up to their party policies when they get elected.

The Union of Moderate Parties will field 31 candidates followed by the Vanuaaki Pati with 25 and the National United party with 17.

Vanuatu goes to the polls on July the 6th after parliament was dissolved by the acting speaker of parliament on advice from the council of ministers.
