The Cook Islands parliament sits for the first time in six months today with doubts being expressed over the leadership of the prime minister, Dr Robert Woonton.

Two weeks ago, the ruling Democratic Party held a conference, with Dr Woonton losing 24 - 26 in a leadership vote against former the prime minister, Dr Terepai Maoate.

But Dr Woonton has said that Democratic members of parliament support his leadership and should have been allowed to vote at their party conference.

General elections are due in the Cook Islands by September, just over three months away.
