Fiji police commissioner hits out at hypocrite leaders

8:09 am on 22 May 2004

Fiji's police commissioner has publicly attacked hypocrites among the country's leaders.

Andrew Hughes says there are individuals in society who are secretly trying to perpetuate instability to serve their own selfish agenda, while hiding behind the cloak of respectability.

Mr Hughes says Fiji is still vulnerable to perpetrators of destabilisation and the police must protect the nation from these people to allow the country to move forward.

He was speaking at the graduation ceremony in Suva for first lot of 100 constables, including 35 women, recruited into the regular force since 1993.

Mr Hughes also presented the commissioner's commendation to 28 officers who showed exceptional courage and devotion to duty when they were taken captive or attacked by George Speight's rebels during the coup.
