New Zealand is to establish a liasion office in Fiji as part of counter terrorism efforts in the region.

The announcment was made jointly by Foreign Minister, Phil Goff, and Police Minister, George Hawkins.

Mr Goff says the establishment of a Suva office reflects the need to be better connected to the regional security enivornment.

"Also, the fact that this is also the hub of the Pacific, will enable us to build links with police forces around the region. And of course, we are more and more engaged in the region with police in Bougainville at the moment, police in the Solomon Islands, and Suva is a likely base for the new Pacific Regional Policing Initiative."
