Nauru and Australia agree on police deployment

3:47 pm on 12 May 2004

The Nauru government says Australian police will be sent to the Nauru within weeks under an agreement signed with Australia yesterday.

The agreement formalises a memorandum of understanding signed last month to help Nauru after US company General Electric Capital Corporation moved to recover debts of about 170 million US dollars.

Under the agreement, Australia will provide Nauru with a senior treasury officer and finance department officials to assist in re-organising Nauru's finances, and a police commissioner and officers to help maintain law and order.

A Nauru government spokesperson says it has not been decided how many police will be sent.
