Pearl farmers in the Cook Islands could stand to benefit from a visit from consultants trained in new technologies.

The co-ordinator for the European Union centre for development and enterprise last week held a series of meetings with representatives from the pearl, fishing and noni industries.

Tommy Pedersen pledged consultants and specialists would travel to the Cook Islands within three months to introduce new farming technologies.

Mr Pedersen said he wanted farmers to avoid middlemen and liaise directly with the market.

He said the European Union was a big and interested market, and he promised he would discuss marketing Cook Islands pearls with EU officials in Brussels this week.
