Vandals disrupt New Caledonian bus service

12:51 pm on 3 May 2004

Bus service in parts of the New Caledonian capital, Noumea, have been disrupted after 24 buses were vandalised at the weekend.

An unknown group entered the bus depot of the company Karuia in the early hours of Sunday and used hammers provided inside the buses for emergencies to smash all side and rear windows.

Radio New Caledonia reports that several empty bottles of alcohol were found at the scene and it has been established that the damaged buses were all parked the furthest away from the guard's house.

The vandalism forced the cancellation of the bus city centre service on Sunday to reorganise the company's operations ahead of the start of the working week.

It is believed to take several weeks to repair all the buses because of problems to source the safety glass needed for the vehicles.
