Niue aid donor conference to be held in Wellington

10:24 am on 28 April 2004

An international donors conference will be held in Wellington today (wed) to look at ways of giving Niue long-term help after the destruction caused by Cyclone Heta in January.

It comes after meetings yesterday between the Niue premier, Young Vivian, and representatives of the New Zealand and Australian governments.

The Samoa-based co-ordinator of the UN Development Programme, Joyce Yu, says there will be wide representation at the round-table meeting.

"It is definitely to look beyond the immediate disaster assistance and to actually use this very important opportunity, this crisis, to look at long-term development...what are the things that need to be in place for a viable future."
