American Samoa cabinet member found dead

7:40 am on 24 April 2004

A cabinet member of the American Samoa government has been found dead at home.

The director of the port at Pago Pago, Seugogo Herman Schirmer, aged fifty-seven, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

But officials are treating the death, at government housing in Tafuna, as a homicide at this stage.

Mr Seugogo, a former captain, had a long naval career in which he headed navy bases in the US and in Hawaii.

His friends, family, and co-workers at the port were shocked to learn of his death.

A employee at the Port administration says he'll miss Mr Seugogo's military style of leadership.

He says Mr Seugogo treated all employees with respect and always had time for workers in the yard.
