Opposition raps Samoa PM over phonelines

10:33 am on 22 April 2004

An opposition party in Samoa has condemned the prime minister for remarks about the managing the country's phone lines.

The Samoa Democratic United Party says Tuilaepa Sailele should apologise for saying Samoans were experts at growing taro but not at telecommunications.

Mr Sailele suggested in a televised interview that some people in the telecoms industry had been quickly promoted, despite not having the required qualifications.

The party says the prime minister belittled Samoans everywhere for his remarks, and for what it described as his 'continued belittling' of Samoans compared with 'so-called expatriate experts'.
