PNG Ombudsman Commission reopens office on Bougainville

8:32 am on 21 April 2004

The Papua New Guinea Ombudsman Commission has reopened on the island of Bougainville for the first time in 15 years.

On Monday the commission's director of operations, John Toguata held the first two of eight meetings with leaders at Arawa.

The meetings are part of the commission's external relations programme to inform the people about its roles and responsibilities.

Mr Toguata says he was impressed with the reception accorded to the small team and he says it was interesting because not everyone knew

much about the commission.

Mr Toguata says after the 15-year absence, now was the best time to return to Bougainville.

The island is preparing for the introduction of its own government by the end of the year.
