Solomons police to tackle backlog of cases

9:34 am on 15 April 2004

The Solomon Islands police commissioner, William Morrell, says the internal investigations unit hopes to clear a backlog of cases within the next twelve months.

Mr Morrell says with increased numbers working in the investigations unit more efforts are going into clearing up outstanding cases.

"There is still something in the region of over four hundred cases which we have not even looked at yet because the workload of the professional standards in the internal investigation unit is such that they are so busy with dealing with the ones they've currently got. They have'nt been able to deal with the other ones."

Mr Morrell says work on discipline issues within the force is also ongoing.
