Solomons Peace Council calls for Guadalcanal land inquiry

12:24 pm on 12 April 2004

The National Peace Council in Solomon Islands has called on the government to move quickly and look into land disputes on Guadalcanal.

The Council chairman, Paul Tovua, says the inquiry should look into the matter as it was at the heart of the ethnic unrest of the 1990's in a bid to prevent similar problems from occurring again.

"Commission of inquiry must be set up. I know the government is working on it - the sooner the better. Otherwise it continues to be an area where conflict will be re-cycled and come back."

Mr Tovua says such an inquiry would answer a lot of questions by those who lost property during the crisis.
