Opposition in Fiji to foreign garment workers

11:42 am on 31 March 2004

Strong objections have been raised in Fiji to calls to be allowed to bring in foreign garment workers.

Both the Fiji Trade Union Congress and the Fiji Council of Trade Unions have opposed the proposal.

Radio Legend quotes the chairman of the Fiji Trade and Investment Bureau as saying importing foreign workers would be a waste of the large amount of money invested in training institutions, including the garment school.

The request for foreign workers has been made by the president of the Textile Clothing and Footwear Council, Ranjit Solanki, who says there is a need for highly skilled workers because productivity is low.
