Fiji PM expects regional economic boon from Ocean Policy

The Fiji prime minister has restated his confidence that regional economies stand to reap huge benefits from the better management of the resources in the Pacific Ocean.

Speaking in Wellington, Laisenia Qarase said once the so-called Ocean Policy is in place, island countries, with the world's largest tuna fishery, will have a different image.

Mr Qarase suggested that this wealth should be used by connecting island economies to global markets.

"This will be our economic lifeblood. We must therefore construct and widen alliances with nations such as China, Japan, the US and the European Union."
