Fiji Medical Association plays down report of questioning overseas recruitment

The President of the Fiji Medical Association, Dr Mary Schramm, has played down a report that she called on the government to order an inquiry into the recruitment of doctors from India.

Radio Fiji reported this week that the Medical Association wrote to the Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, expressing concern over the appointment of 11 expatriate doctors.

However, Dr Schramm says she did not question the need for recruitment of the doctors, but merely expressed concern about the Government recruitment process.

She says she has received a satisfactory reply that the substance of her concern is now being dealt with.

The doctors are believed to have been hired as consultants and chief medical officers.
