Former Morobe premier condemns PNG governor's anti-Australian comments

2:46 pm on 4 March 2004

A former premier of Papua New Guinea's Morobe province has described Morobe Governor Luther Wenge's comments about Australians as baseless and the product of narrow-mindedness.

Haggai Joshua was responding to Governor Wenge's claim that Morobe had enough manpower and resources and Australian advisors were not welcome to work in the province under the Enhanced Australian Aid Programme.

Mr Joshua told the National newspaper the governor should be ashamed of his comments adding that Australians have invested heavily in Morobe in terms of business and aid.

He said Australia had always been at the forefront to see PNG become an independent nation and Mr Wenge's comments reflected badly on the province.
