PNG governor restates opposition to Australian role in PNG administration

Papua New Guinea's Morobe Governor, Luther Wenge, says he and his provincial members will resist any effort to place Australian advisors in the public service.

Under an agreement between the national government and the Australian government Australian officers will be drafted to PNG to help in various areas including policing, the judiciary and the public service.

The first batch of eight Australian officials arrived in the country last week and took up posts in the public service.

Governor Wenge says it is a serious step that he and his provincial government will oppose.

He says the country does not need Australians to come and run things when there are capable people in the country.
