There was an emergency landing at American Samoa's Pago Pago International airport this morning when a Cessna Centurion aircraft on its way to Christchurch in New Zealand reported problems with its engine.
Shortly after 6 o'clock this morning, local time, the pilot of the plane notified airport authorities that problems had developed in the engine about 150 miles out and he was returning to make an emergency landing.
The pilot said his airspeed was dropping rapidly and the aircraft was using so much fuel he might not be able to make it to Christchurch.
Airport crash units and ambulances were on standby when the plane landed at Pago Pago just after 8 o'clock this morning.
The pilot was safe and the single engined aircraft was undamaged during the landing.
