Police in Fiji say bomb hoaxes possibly linked to court cases

Police in Fiji say they believe that bomb hoaxes yesterday were an attempt to delay court cases of certain criminals.

The three hoaxes forced the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, several ministers, and hundreds of public servants out of their offices twice in Suva yesterday.

Police spokesman, Mesake Koroi, says they are working closely with Telecom to trace the calls, but they believe the know the motivation.

"It was a move to try and distract the police so that the court sessions that were supposed to have been held yesterday, in which a number of known criminals were to appear in court, had to be postponed. And, we believe that that's one of the motivating factor behind it."

Mr Koroi says the hoaxes could also be linked to the criminals who committed two armed robberies of a supermarket and a jewellers which netted them more than 125,000 U.S. dollars.
