20 asylum seekers from Nauru arrive in New Zealand today

9:42 am on 6 February 2004

A small group of asylum seekers from Nauru who have been granted resettlement in New Zealand on humanitarian grounds arrive in the country today.

The Government responded to a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees request to take 20 asylum seekers from Nauru after Australia rejected them.

The group of Iraqi women, their children and one Afghan man, is the first of three small groups being counted as part of the annual refugee quota of 750 people.

The women may later be joined by their husbands who are in Australia on temporary protection visas.

The Afghan man is an uncle to other Afghan refugees already in New Zealand.
