Power restored in Tuvalu following a week without electricity

8:40 am on 31 January 2004

Power has been restored in Tuvalu for a few hours following a week without electricity after the breakdown of a high-powered cable.

An official from the Tuvalu Electricity corporation says that a senior technician from Fiji is working with local technicians to rectify the problem.

Most government offices have been operating with a skeleton staff during the week.

Primary schools on the main island are yet to resume normal classes because of the power blackout.

And, classes at the country's only secondary school, on Vaitupu island, have been postponed to February 9th because of sanitation problems.
