Niue finance minister to discuss cyclone recovery efforts with NZ government

Niue's finance minister, Toke Talagi, is in Wellington for discussions with the New Zealand government over the reconstruction of the island after Cyclone Heta.

Mr Talagi is having discussions with the deputy prime minister Dr Michael Cullen, the foreign minister, Phil Goff, the aid minister Marion Hobbs and the economic development minister, Jim Anderton.

It had been expected that Mr Talagi would brief the ministers on the results of a needs assessment survey undertaken by the Niue government, but that is not yet complete.

Last week, New Zealand pledged to give Niue five million New Zealand dollars towards the reconstruction effort, but Mr Goff has indicated more money will be provided.
