Papua New Guinea NGO share world wide wildlife conservation prize

A Papue New Guinea non-government organisation will share the prestigious J Paul Getty wildlife conservation prize for 2003.

Conservation Melanesia has been recognised for its assistance to the rural Maisin community in protecting its ancestral lands frmo the encroachment of logging, oil palm and illegal land deals.

Maisin, located in Collingwood Bay between Northern and Milne Bay provinces, is a very isolated area of PNG.

The Post Courier reports that apart from Conservation Melanesia, conservation leaders from Russia, Indonesia, Chile and China will share the prize, according to the World Wildlife Fund in Washington DC.

The winners will take equal shares of the 100 thousand US dollars-award.
