Forum Secretariat head urges civil society groups to keep up pressure for good governance

The acting Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat has urged civil society groups to keep up the pressure for good governance in the region and for more equal treatment in global trade.

Iosefa Maiava says civil society groups play an important role in supporting good governance which is a necessary prerequisite for sustainable development.

Mr Maiava also says the region's special circumstances have made it more difficult for development under trade globalisation.

He says the long-term success of globalisation in the region depends on it being better managed to adapt to small and vulnerable economies and communities.

"The chances of the smaller and vulnerable economies gaining as much as the stronger economies from globalisation can be greatly enhanced if there was, for example, a recognition that these smaller economies need preferential treatment in recognition of their special circumstances and the fact that at the moment there is no level playing field, for example, as far as multi lateral trade is concerned"
