The Fijian Teachers Association is voicing concern about a planned code of ethics which is to be introduced into secondary schools.
The association's secretary-general, Maika Namudu, says the code, from the Ministry of Education, is aimed at both teachers and students to show them how to go about resolving behavioural problems.
It is also aimed at ending corporal punishment in schools.
Mr Naimudu says they support the code in principle but have some concerns.
"We still have some reservations in how they're going to put these things into action or in the implementation before a child is finally taken out of the school system. What are the steps that they're going to take - they say, they need to be counselled. What I'm worried about - how many counselling before they make up the decision for him to be suspended."
Mr Namudu says the code is in draft form only at this stage and the ministry is waiting to hear back from principals and others about amendments that should be made.
