Fiji's chief justice has hightlighted serious shortcomings in the country's criminal justice system.
The Fiji Times reports that Daniel Fatiaki raised his concerns at a prosecutor's conference currently under way.
Justice Fatiaki says Fiji's criminal justice system is at a severe disadvantage because of outdated laws and old forensic equipment.
He says the emergence of new crimes and a new breed of crimnals with a range of telecommuncaitons and other devices are posing a new challenge to law enforcement.
He says terrorism, people sumggling, money laundering, organised crime, and drug smuggling and manufacture are new to the Pacific.
As well, Fiji has no law to deal specifically with Cyber crime and its drug laws do not deal with modern drugs.
Justice Fatiaki says the government must supply the tools before law enforcement agencies can deal with these crimes.
