4:59 pm on 8 December 2003

A Taiwanese fishing vessel which had been intercepted for fishing illegally in New Caledonian waters has been put under police surveillance in the port of Noumea.

The local newspaper reports that authorities have removed a key engine component to prevent the Shang Sheng from trying to escape.

The ship's captain is due in court shortly for transgressions which carry a maximum jail of ten years.

These include the alleged attempt to ram a New Caledonian fishing vessel, the Karaavah 4.

All the other charges, such as illegal fishing, attempted escape and removing identity signs incur fines only.
