Fiji police have tightened security for today's by-election for the Labasa Rural indian seat in the House of Representatives.
Mobile patrols, foot patrols and checkpoints have been set up for the 18 polling stations.
A police spokesman is quoted as saying they are expecting the unexpected and preparing for anything.
Election officials have been put on alert to look out for people who might impersonate others and cast votes in their names.
The Labour, National Federation and SDL parties have all sponsored candidates, there is one from the Justice and Freedom Movement and one independent.
The result of the by-election is expected to be known this weekend.
