Palau releases Chinese vessel after settlement

7:13 am on 3 December 2003

The Palau government has released a Chinese fishing vessel after its owners paid 40-thousand US dollars in a settlement.

The attorney general's office says the 93-meter long M/V Tai Ning was intercepted after it tried to evade a routine inspection by ignoring warning shots.

A patrol boat stopped the vessel and found it to be carrying 26 hundred tons of tuna.

The operator of the Tai Ning was charged with resisting, impeding and interfering with officers in conduct of a search and inspection.

No charges of fishing violations were filed and after paying the settlement fee the ship left Palau on Sunday.
