Emergency doctors in New Caledonia on four-day strike

4:34 am on 21 November 2003

Doctors in the emergency ward at New Caledonia's main hospital in Noumea are on a four-day strike for better conditions.

The doctors will stay away until Saturday, demanding that their status as so-called hospital assistants be upgraded as they perform the same jobs as other doctors classed as hospital practitioners.

Those on strike also say their ward is understaffed.

They were on strike already a month ago but say they have gone on strike again because nothing has happened.

Other hospital doctors are meanwhile protesting at the cancellation of their leave which they have accumulated over a long period of time.
