Fiji's hire purchase companies have been warned not to use misleading and deceptive advertising.

The ministry of commerce says non-disclosure of all facts and information is a breach of the Fair Trading Decree and an offence.

The ministry's permanent secretary, Isireli Koyamaibole, says the Fair Trading Department has recently issued warning letters to companies which use the media to advertise their products sold on credit.

The companies have been told to advertise the cash price of their products as well as all the terms of credit such as weekly or monthly installments, annual interest percentage rates, and all other fees and charges.

Most of Fiji's workers buy furniture and appliances on hire purchase.
