Solomons public sector unions issue strike notice

11:32 am on 7 November 2003

Seven public sector unions in Solomon Islands have given notice that a nationwide strike action will begin on November 28.

The notice follows a breakdown in negotiations between the government and the unions involved.

The General Secretary of the Public Employees Union, Clement Waiwori, says the unions wanted a five per cent compulsory salary adjustment backdated to January 1996 and a twenty per cent cost of living adjustment backdated to January last year.

The unions have also demanded that that if there is going to be wage restraint between now and 2005, the government should put a price restraint regime in place for the same period.
