New Caledonia Congress approves proposed tax cuts

11:14 am on 7 November 2003

New Caledonia's congress has voted in favour of a 5 percent tax cut, approving a government decision made last month.

The local newspaper, Nouvelles Caledoniennes, says the change was widely supported and only opposed by one party, the Caledonian Union.

Businesses affected by Cyclone Erica in March have also been given tax concessions and individuals whose homes were damaged can reclaim the land tax they paid last year.
