Fiji police investigate Chaudhry assassination plot

4:43 pm on 30 October 2003

Fiji police are investigating a plot to kidnap and assassinate the former prime minister, Mahendra Chaudhry, a month before the May 2000 coup overthrew his government.

The police commissioner, Andrew Hughes, says the plot is among the major investigations remaining into the coup.

Mr Hughes says there are people who have detailed and intimate knowledge of the plot, and he has appealed to them to come forward with the evidence.

He says, subject to fresh evidence, they're aiming to wind up the thorough and transparent investigations by the end of the year.

"It's time for Fijians to put Fiji first, stand up and be counted. Let's get this resolved, get matters dealt with by the court so that the rule of law prevails and then we can close that very sad chapter in Fiji's history and move on."
